Long before we formally gathered as a community we had a name: Grace. It was the single word that captured the very essence of our faith, who we hoped to be, and the God who was to make it all possible. Later, we needed a legal name to register with the state of Massachusetts; Grace Community Church was not yet taken. Our legal documents all read: Grace Community Church. Yet when we refer to ourselves we often shorten our name to Grace Community, because first and foremost, we are a community. We are a motley group of people, much like the first disciples, trying our best to follow Jesus in authentic and loving relationships with one another and the world. Church too often is a stuffy, tired out word. We are not “your grandmother’s church.” We are not “churchy.” We are a community of people who happen to gather on most Sunday evenings. 

Grace Community Church. Grace Community. Grace Community Boston. Yet we aspire to be just Grace.

We dream of being a community without limits just as God’s grace has no limits. We pray that we may not only be Grace to one another within our community, but a channel for God’s grace to those outside of our community. We hope that Grace will be the one word used to describe us. For it is only by the Grace of God that we are Grace Community Church. ​

The details of our story are much less interesting. We gathered for the first time in August 2010. Since then we have rented 6 different locations, wrestled with what it means to be a community following Jesus in the 21st century, and stayed deeply committed to the progressive gospel. Throughout our story there are always children, authentic conversation, and service to others. It's been that simple.
